Site location and context
An important area of natural boreal forests, fjelds and peatland in the heart of Lapland. The forests are mostly natural tracts of old
Pinus sylvestris and
Picea abies trees. All
types of mires found in the Peräpohjola zone are present, including forested, open herb-rich and -poor, twig-abundant and grass-dominated mires.
An important area for boreal avifauna. Breeding birds include 11 out of the 15 species in Europe that are restricted to the boreal biome (when breeding).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
