Lord Howe Island Permanent Park Preserve (Lord Howe Island IBA)

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('key species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-tailed Tropicbird Phaethon rubricauda LC resident (2004) 500–1,000 breeding pairs A4ii
Lord Howe Woodhen Hypotaenidia sylvestris EN resident (1999–2002) 147–205 individuals A1, A2
Providence Petrel Pterodroma solandri LC resident (2002) 32,000 breeding pairs A1, A4ii
Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica LC resident (-) 10,000–100,000 breeding pairs A4ii
Flesh-footed Shearwater Ardenna carneipes NT resident (2002) 17,462 breeding pairs A4ii
Little Shearwater Puffinus assimilis LC resident (1971–2004) 4,000 breeding pairs A4ii
Blue Noddy Anous ceruleus LC resident (1996–2004) 100–1,000 breeding pairs A4i
A4iii Species group - seabirds n/a breeding (1971–2002) 64,000–155,500 breeding pairs A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation status
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 very unfavourable high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat -

State (condition of the key species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest moderate (70–90%) very poor (<40%) very unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the key species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow deterioration (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no deterioration (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the key species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area of site (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
