Site description (2000 baseline)
A narrow strait including islands and peninsulas with coves, lagoons, saltmarshes, reedbeds, broadleaved forests, cultivated land and some scattered habitation.

Key biodiversity
Up to seven waterbird species are present in significant numbers during cold winters, totalling over 20,000 individuals. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna paradisaea and S. albifrons.
