Lapväärti wetlands


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A complex of shallow and nutrient-rich coastal wetlands surrounding the Lapväärti river delta, including Härkmerifjärden, a shallow, nutrient-rich lake, covered by large beds of reed Phragmites and bulrush Scirpus. Human activities include fishing and boating.



Key biodiversity
An important staging area for waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Anser erythropus (max. 1 bird, passage), Haliaeetus albicilla (max. 2 birds, passage), Crex crex (max. 2 pairs, breeding).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Overgrowth of the wetland is a threat. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National None International Partial669 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Lapväärtin kosteikot).
