NO035
Lake Leksdalsvatn

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2014 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus LC passage (2003–2013) 300–700 birds B1i
Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus LC passage (2004–2013) 2,000–12,000 birds A4i, B1i
Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus VU breeding (2007–2010) 44–45 pairs B1i, B2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2014. The most recent assessment (2020) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2020 not assessed low low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus 750 / 700 (birds) 100 good
Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus 8,000 / 12,000 (birds) 67 poor
Horned Grebe Podiceps auritus 28 / 45 (pairs) 63 poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Energy production and mining happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Unknown A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Unknown low
