Lake Hajigabul

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2005 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN winter (1997–2004) 300–960 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris NT winter (1997–2004) 267 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris NT breeding (1997–2004) 9–19 pairs A1
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT resident (1997–2004) 22–52 pairs A1
Northern Shoveler Spatula clypeata LC winter (1997–2004) 3,200–6,400 birds B1i
Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis LC winter (1997–2004) 1,030–2,745 birds A4i, B1i
Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax NT winter (1997–2004) 2,000 birds A1
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC resident (1997–2004) 400–650 birds A1
Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius CR winter (1997–2004) 14 birds A1

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2005. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 very poor very high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) very poor (<40%) poor (40–69%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Biological resource use happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution likely in long term (>4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low
