Site description (2001 baseline):

Site location and context
Area located on the Caspian shore on the border of Dagestan and Kalmyk regions. In inventory 1995 RU172 and RU178 were identified as different IBAs. But by moment RU178 (Island) is below the Caspian sea level, so more carefull to merge Ru172 and Ru178 in one IBA (RU178 SHOULD BE DELETED FROM DATABASE).

Habitat and land use
Very shallow water with a wide belt of Phragmites.Increasing Caspian Sea level is main threat.

Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
From 1970 also Zakaznik "Morskoi Biruychek" (50000 ha) exists at area (on the area of island, which was flooded in 1990th and surruonded shallow water). But by moment the new boundari of this protected area should be agrred as bpundary of this Zakaznik and current Dagestanski Zapovednik overlaps in some places.
