Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The site comprises saltpans, lagoons, sand and shingle beaches, and a small area of steppe, on Lanzarote. Human activities include exploitation of the saltpans.
This site is important for breeding and wintering waterbirds. It is also one of the best sites in the Canary Islands for migrant waders, both in terms of the variety of species present and the numbers of individuals.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Threats include feral cats
Felis catus that prey upon birds at night, the dumping of car oil into the lagoon (`Other' threat), and disturbance to birds caused by uncontrolled recreation and tourism. The area is a game refuge, and the local government undertook a census of wintering birds during 1993 and 1994.
