Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A sea area with shoals and banks, coastal slopes and uninhabited islands. Some areas are enclosed by dykes. Terrestrial habitats (totalling 5% of the IBA) include broadleaved woodland, saltmarshes, reedbeds, small plantations, agricultural areas, sandflats, dunes and beaches.
Of high importance for waterbirds (regularly more than 20,000 present in total). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Haliaeetus albicilla (non-breeding). Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including
Botaurus stellaris, Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea and
S. albifrons.
National Partial
International Partial32,970 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Hyllekrog Rødsand, 32,970 ha). 36,800 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Waters between Lolland and Falster including Rodsand, 36,800 ha).
