Site description (2000 baseline)
A sea area with shoals and banks, coastal slopes and uninhabited islands. Some areas are enclosed by dykes. Terrestrial habitats (totalling 5% of the IBA) include broadleaved woodland, saltmarshes, reedbeds, small plantations, agricultural areas, sandflats, dunes and beaches.
Key biodiversity
Of high importance for waterbirds (regularly more than 20,000 present in total). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (non-breeding). Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Botaurus stellaris, Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons.
