Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1984, upgraded to Honghe National Nature Reserve in 1996, and designated in 2002 as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ (or Ramsar site) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. There are no people resident in the reserve, and the biodiversity and natural environment are well preserved.
