Hideshima islet

Site description (2007 baseline):

Site location and context
The site is an uninhabited islet about 1 km off shore of Hinodejima fishery harbor in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture. The shape of the islet is a tableland surrounded by cliffs, and its steep slopes are breeding sites for burrow nesting sea birds. The islet is widely covered with broadleaf trees such as Quercus crispula and Tilia japonica, and Pinus densiflora and Cyryptomeria japonica also occur in some areas. Forest floors in the center of the islet were covered with Pseudosasa japonica while the east slope in the northern area was covered with Reynoutria sachalinensis and from the west slope to southern area with Ophiopogen planiscdapus, but bare ground has become distinctive lately. Since the late of 1980s, the vegetation has been changing rapidly as the number of Streaked Shearwater is increasing.
