Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The site comprises the old course of the River Rhine with oxbow lakes. The flood-plain area is dominated by meadows. The IBA comprises two sites from the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989): Kühkopf-Knoblauchsaue (former site DE064) and Lampertheimer Altrhein (former site DE065).
This is an important area for breeding and wintering waterbirds and is nationally important for breeding
Luscinia svecica, as well as for species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Aythya nyroca, Crex crex (breeding).

International PartialIBA overlaps with Nature Reserves (Kühkopf-Knoblauchsaue, 2,369 ha and Lampertheimer Altrhein, 525 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Areas (Kühkopf-Knoblauchsaue, 2,369 ha and Lampertheimer Altrhein, 525 ha).
