Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A poorly-drained flood-plain, situated between Kapuvár and Csorna. Human activities are partially controlled, and include mowing and grazing of grasslands, peat extraction, reed-harvesting and hunting.
An important area for marshland birds. Numbers of breeding
Egretta alba have increased markedly due to artificial flooding on c.1,000 ha. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Aythya nyroca (2-3 breeding pairs),
Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering),
Crex crex (4-5 breeding pairs),
Otis tarda (1-2 breeding individuals).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threat is the abandonment of grassland management practices, leading to loss of habitat. A further 3,500 ha, the majority of which is already owned by the Fertõ-Hanság National Park Directorate, is being designated as a protected area. A management plan exists, and the IBA is a proposed Biosphere Reserve.
