Gunung Bromo Tengger-Semeru


Site description (1999 baseline):

Site location and context
Located around 17 km east of Malang, this area is one of five volacano areas in East Java. The higest volacano in Java Island is Gunung Semeru (Mt. Semeru) is located in this area. Most of the area located on altitude 2000 m.



Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Panthera pardus and Trachypithecus auratus (Beudels & Hardi 1980, Nijman 1997).



Habitat and land use
Grassland and cemara forest and 3 lakes (Ranu Kumbolo, Ranu Pani and Ranu Regulo) inside this area (Directorate General of Tourism undated). The Bromo/Semeru massif consist of blocks of volcanic highland dominated by 10 km wide striking and dramatic Tengger Caldera. The finest lower mountain rainforest of East Java can be found in the altitude below 3000 m (MacKinnon et.al.1982).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Burning forest, forest cutting and clearence for plantation and disturbance from vehicles crossing the caldera (MacKinnon et.al.1982).



Protected areas
Declared as National Park (57606 ha) based on SK Menteri Pertanian on 6 March 1980 (Anon 1997, Anon 1998), and Menhut 278/Kpts-VI/1997 on 23 May 1997 (50276.20 ha)
