Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A mountainous area along the border with France. The site contains scrub, wet grassland and
Fagus forest. The main human activities are livestock-farming, hunting and forestry.
An important site for breeding raptors, particularly for
Gyps fulvus.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from intensive forest management, disturbance from visitors and hunting. There is a recovery plan for
Gypaetus barbatus, and there are management plans for the reserves.

International High266 ha of IBA covered by Wild Fauna Reserve (Iparla, 266 ha). 107 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Irubetakaskoa, 107 ha). 115 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Itxusi, 115 ha). 5,909 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Aritzakun-Urrizate-Gorramendi, 5,909 ha).
