Fuente de Piedra, Gosque and Campillos lakes


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A wetland complex comprising a group of shallow, seasonal, brackish lakes, surrounded by cultivation.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for breeding and wintering waterbirds. It is the only regular breeding area for Phoenicopterus ruber in Spain. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Tetrax tetrax (83 wintering individuals).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Threats include the expansion of olive cultivation, sedimentation in the lakes, burning of the reedbeds, drainage and over-extraction of groundwater and infilling with rubbish. A management plan is being produced.

National Partial International Partial1,554 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Laguna de Fuentepiedra, 1,554 ha). 80 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Laguna de Campillos, 80 ha). 23 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Laguna de la Ratosa, 23 ha). 28 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Laguna del Gosque, 28 ha). 1,554 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, 1,554 ha). 1,364 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Laguna de Fuentepiedra, 1,364 ha).
