Forêts domaniales de Corse

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus NT breeding (1996) 3–5 pairs B2
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos LC breeding (1991) 10–20 pairs B2
Corsican Nuthatch Sitta whiteheadi VU breeding (1991) 1,000–1,500 pairs A1, A2, A3, B2, C1, C2, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 poor high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population unknown

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Corsican Nuthatch Sitta whiteheadi 650 / 1,250 (pairs) 52 poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest good (>90%) poor (40–69%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Very little or no conservation action taking place medium
