Fiener Bruch


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A large bog in the lowland area of the Baruther Urstromtal with inland dunes, reedbeds (Phragmites), wet forest and a widespread system of ditches.



Key biodiversity
One of the three sites in Germany for Otis tarda. The site regularly holds 20,000 or more waterbirds on passage. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (5 breeding pairs) and Otis tarda (10-11 birds).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
There are land-use extensification, water-management and predator-control programmes. 1,700 ha are covered by an Otis tarda protection area.



Protected areas
National Low International None143 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Fiener Bruch, 143 ha).
