Site description (2000 baseline)
A large bog in the lowland area of the Baruther Urstromtal with inland dunes, reedbeds (Phragmites), wet forest and a widespread system of ditches.

Key biodiversity
One of the three sites in Germany for Otis tarda. The site regularly holds 20,000 or more waterbirds on passage. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (5 breeding pairs) and Otis tarda (10-11 birds).
