Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A lake,
Pinus forests, heathland, marshes, wet meadows and cultivated fields.
The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds in winter, on a regular basis (including
Fulica atra 2,562;
Vanellus vanellus 3,500). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Aythya nyroca (wintering);
Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering);
Acrocephalus paludicola (passage).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The site was protected in 1986 and has since become of international importance for waterbirds. Nevertheless, water pollution from agricultural run-off remains a threat.
National Partial
International Partial775 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Marais d'Orx, 775 ha). 4,250 ha of IBA covered by Hunting Reserve (4,250 ha). 785 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Domaine d'Orx, 785 ha).
