Dnister delta This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Greylag Goose Anser anser LC breeding (1992) 130 pairs B1i
Common Teal Anas crecca LC passage (1992) 25,000 birds A4i, B1i
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus LC breeding (1993) 120–1,500 pairs A4i, B1i, B2
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax LC breeding (1993) 1,000–2,500 pairs A4i, B1i, B2
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea LC breeding (1993) 100–150 pairs B2
Great White Egret Ardea alba LC breeding (1992) 110–330 pairs A4i, B1i
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC breeding (1993) 2,000–2,500 pairs A4i, B1i
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a passage (1992) 20,000-49,999 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 very poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Greylag Goose Anser anser 130 / 130 (pairs) 100 good
Anas crecca 3,000 / 25,000 (pairs) 12 very poor
Eurasian Coot Fulica atra 2,000 / 2,000 (pairs) 100 good
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus 310 / 810 (pairs) 39 very poor
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax 200 / 1,750 (pairs) 12 very poor
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea 100 / 125 (pairs) 80 moderate
Great White Egret Ardea alba 110 / 220 (pairs) 50 poor
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo 2,000 / 2,500 (pairs) 80 moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Energy production and mining happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Climate change and severe weather happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance likely in long term (>4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low
