Site location and context
A mountainous area in the Cordillera Cantábrica with extensive deciduous woods dominated by
Fagus sylvatica. The area is used for game hunting, coal mining and cattle-grazing.
This is an important site for breeding species associated with upland forests and open alpine habitats.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Coal mining is a serious threat to the site. A project to enlarge the ski-station at Leitariegos and construct new roads poses an additional threat. Illegal hunting and forest fires also occur.
