Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
Low-lying flood-plain surrounded by alluvial fans in the vicinity of the villages of Pitvaros, Tótkomlós and Csanádalberti. Wet saline grasslands cover the majority of the site, with loess grasslands and arable fields on the higher ground. Human activities include grazing, arable farming and hunting.
An important area for steppic birds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Haliaeetus albicilla (2-6 wintering birds),
Otis tarda (15-25 resident individuals).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats to the IBA are the drainage of seasonal ponds and the mechanization of agriculture. A management plan exists for the area.
