Site location and context
A mountain range between Eger and Miskolc, with deep valleys and a wide plateau. Deciduous oak
Quercus forests exist between 200 m and 600 m, with submontane forests of
Quercus,
Carpinus and
Fagus above 700 m. Oak forest, scrub and rocky grassland on the southern slopes experience a more continental micro-climate. Human activities include intensive forest management and hunting.
An important area for raptors and forest birds.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
A long-term research and conservation project on raptors has been carried out, including the safeguarding of nests and provision of artificial nest-sites. The enlargement of Bükk National Park is underway, and a management plan exists for the area.
