Site description (2003 baseline):
Site location and context
The third largest National Park in Sumatra which located on the south-west of Sumatra.
Although some threatened wetland birds such Lesser Adjutant
Leptoptilus javanicus and White-winged Duck
Cairina scutulata exist in this area, but this area is characteristized with restricted-range bird species and bird species in medium-high level altitude. Two restricted-range bird species identified near Liwa are Black-crowned Pitta
Pitta venusta and
Trichastoma buettikoferi. Along the beach in Belimbing Beach Thick-knee
Burhinus giganteus (the only record for Sumatra ?).
Non-bird biodiversity: Aonyx cinerea, Cervus unicolor, Dicerorninus sumatraensis, Elephas maximus, Helarctos malayanus, Hylobates agilis, Hystrix bracyura, Hylobates syndactylus, Lutra sumatrana, Martes flavigula, Neofelis nebulosa, Panthera tigris, Presbytis cristata, Presbytis melalophos and Tapirus indicus (O'Brien & Kinnaird 1996, Verbelen 2000).
Lower mountain forest, lower mountain evergreen forest, and coastal forest formation.

Forest clearence for agriculture/plantation, illegal logging and forest fire in 1997 (O'Brien
et.al.1998)
Declared as National Park (365000 ha) on 14 October 1982 based on SK Mentan No. 736/Mentan/X/82 (Anon 1998).
