Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A natural lake situated near to the Danube river, and supplied by the Desnatui and Baboia rivers. There is limited aquatic vegetation; mudflats occur in neighbouring marshy areas. The lake is managed for pisciculture.
This is an important breeding and stop-over site for large numbers of waterbirds; also utilized by non-breeding waterbirds as a feeding area. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Branta ruficollis (2-20 wintering birds),
Aythya nyroca (10-15 passage birds) and
Haliaeetus albicilla (1-2 passage birds).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Hunting is encouraged, particularly of piscivorous birds.
