IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2006 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus VU passage (1989–1990) 500–800 birds A1, A4i
Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo LC breeding (2005) 8–11 pairs A3
Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax NT breeding (2005) 35–65 pairs A1, A3
Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius CR breeding (2001) 2 pairs A1, A3
Black-winged Pratincole Glareola nordmanni NT breeding (2005) 10 pairs A1, A3
Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca VU breeding (2005) 2–3 pairs A1, A3
Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus NT breeding (2000–2005) 47 pairs A1, A3
White-winged Lark Alauda leucoptera LC breeding (1992) 1,990–3,600 pairs A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2006. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 good medium medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Artificial/Terrestrial good (>90%) good (>90%) good
Grassland good (>90%) good (>90%) good
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) good (>90%) good
Forest good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented medium
