Site description (2012 baseline):

Key biodiversity
Rimatara Lorikeet (EN), Rarotonga Flycatcher (EN), Atiu Swiftlet (VU) and Cook Islands Fruit-dove (VU) are all resident on the island. Wintering site for Bristle-highed Curlew (VU).

Habitat and land use
Upraised limestone island with volcanic centre. Population of 481 living in villages in the centre. Outer ring of makatea undeveloped and consisting of mostly native vegetation.

Invasive species, Habitat destruction
