Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-breasted Goose Branta ruficollis VU passage (1996) 60 birds A1
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC passage (1996) 500,000 birds A4i, B1i
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea LC winter (-) 424 birds A4i, B1i
Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo LC breeding (1995) present A3
Common Crane Grus grus LC passage (1996) 57,000 birds A4i, B1i
Black-winged Pratincole Glareola nordmanni NT breeding (1995) present A3
Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus NT breeding (1995) present A3
A4iv Species group - soaring birds/cranes n/a passage (1996) 57,000 birds A4iv, B1iv
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a passage (1996) 500,000-999,999 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.
