Alyki Kitrous lagoon


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A coastal lagoon surrounded by dunes, saltpans, saltmarsh, holiday homes and residential areas.



Key biodiversity
The site is important for passage and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Phalacrocorax pygmeus (1-5 wintering individuals), Branta ruficollis (wintering), Oxyura leucocephala (wintering), Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering), Aquila clanga (wintering).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The major threat is from housing development in the areas of dunes and saltmarsh. Larus melanocephalus no longer occurs as a breeding species as a result of disturbance. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National High International High1,500 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Alyki Kitrous, 1,784 ha). 1,200 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Delta Axiou, Loudia, Aliakmona-Alyki Kitrous, 13,763 ha).
