Alyki Kitrous lagoon

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna LC winter (1996) 1,000 birds B1i, C3
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta LC passage (1989) 1,240 birds A4i, B1i, C2
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta LC breeding (1989) 128 pairs B3, C6
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta LC winter (1991) 486 birds B1i, B2, C2, C6
Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola LC breeding (1996) 60 pairs B1i, B2, C2
Slender-billed Gull Larus genei LC breeding (1992) 45 pairs C2
Little Tern Sternula albifrons LC breeding (1996) 60 pairs C6
Common Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica LC breeding (1996) 48 pairs B2, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 not assessed high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no unset -

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Neritic very poor (<40%) moderate (70–90%) very poor
Marine Coastal/Supratidal moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low
