Adzhi Lake

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2007 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN breeding 2004 1-10 breeding pairs A1, B2
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT breeding 2004 15-25 breeding pairs A1, B2

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2007) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2007. The most recent assessment (2006) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2006 very unfavourable high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Reference Actual Units % remaining Result
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala 2 1 breeding pairs 50 unfavourable
Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna 5 3 breeding pairs 60 unfavourable
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea 15 8 breeding pairs 54 unfavourable
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca 15 12 breeding pairs 80 near favourable
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus 200 44 individuals 22 very unfavourable
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus 11 11 individuals 100 favourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high
Agricultural expansion and intensification likely in long term (beyond 4 years) some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Biological resource use happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat1 Habitat detail % of IBA
Desert Semidesert 16
Wetlands (inland) Standing brackish and salt water major (>10)
1. IUCN Habitat classification.

Land use
