RU1174
Adzhi Lake

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2007 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN breeding (2004) 1–10 pairs A1, B2
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT breeding (2004) 15–25 pairs A1, B2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2007. The most recent assessment (2006) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2006 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala 1 / 2 (pairs) 50 poor
Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna 3 / 5 (pairs) 60 poor
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea 8 / 15 (pairs) 54 poor
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca 12 / 15 (pairs) 80 moderate
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus 44 / 200 (birds) 22 very poor
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus 11 / 11 (birds) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
