Taxonomic note
Previously treated as Garrulax galbanus (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) but moved to current genus following Cibois et al. (2018). Very closely related to, and until recently treated as conspecific with, P. courtoisi, but since separation of latter (Collar 2006) present species found also to possess a blue panel on ear-coverts (Wilkinson & He 2010) and “very distinct differences” in song (Edwards et al. 2016). Monotypic.
