Population justification: The population size of this species has not been estimated, nor has a population density been compiled. However, there is approximately 22,000 km2 of forest at a suitable elevation in its range (per Global Forest Watch 2022) and it does not appear to occur at an atypically low density (eBird 2022).
Trend justification: Data on this species are lacking, however the most likely threat, tree cover loss, has been minimal over the past 20 years and much of the range now lies in protected areas (e.g. Kinabalu Park, Crocker Range, Gunung Mulu National Park and Kayan Mentarang). In the three generations (11.25 years; Bird et al. 2020) to 2021, forest cover loss was equivalent to 4–5% depending on the forest cover thresholds set (Global Forest Watch 2022, based on data from Hansen et al. [2013] and methods disclosed therein). Consequently, although suspected to be declining, rates of decline are thought to be slow, set here in the band 1–9% over three generations.
