Justification of Red List category
This species is known from very few records and it is unclear why it has not been observed more frequently in recent times. There is insufficient information at this time to estimate range size, population size or population trend and consequently the species is classified as Data Deficient.
Population justification
This species is very poorly known from a specimen collected in 1829 and one sight record in 2006 (Whittaker 2008).
Trend justification
Data on population trends is lacking.
Records of the species have come from the Rio Madeira in south-central Amazonian Brazil, with an additional sighting from Cristalino in northern Mato Grosso. It was known only from a specimen collected in 1829, originally treated as an abnormal subadult intermediate between Tityra inquisitor albitorques and T. i. pelzelni (del Hoyo et al. 2004). There has been one subsequent published report of this species, with a sight record of a presumed adult male in 2006 (Whittaker 2008). This sighting took place in terra firme forest of the Rio Madeira drainage area of Amazonian Brazil, the same area where the holotype was collected (Whittaker 2008).
