Taxonomic note
Race boothi relatively distinct owing to lack of white in wing from which species derives its English and scientific names, but, while this change is fairly abrupt in the continuous population, all other features of the two taxa are clinal (Crome and Johnstone 1979). Proposed subspecies alisteri (Broome Bay area of N Western Australia) duller and with smaller white wing patch, considered to represent W end of cline (Gibbs et al. 2001). Two subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as common (Gibbs et al. 2001). The population is suspected to be in decline owing to predation by domestic cats (del Hoyo et al. 1997).
