Stactolaema leucotis and S. leucogrammica (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as S. leucotis following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be locally common to uncommon (del Hoyo et al. 2002). The population is suspected to be in decline owing to removal of dead trees which are required for nesting and roosting and habitat fragmentation (del Hoyo et al. 2002).
