LC
White-browed Shama Copsychus luzoniensis

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note

Previously listed as Kittacincla luzoniensis (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) but moved to Copsychus on the basis of unpublished genetic data (Per Alström, in litt. via WGAC) that support a broad Copsychus. Kittacincla luzoniensis and K. superciliaris (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as Copsychus luzoniensis following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993). Until recently considered conspecific with C. superciliaris. Subspecies parvimaculata only rather weakly differentiated from nominate; shemleyi poorly known, and validity has been questioned. Deep genetic divergence reported among populations ascribed to nominate subspecies from different parts of Luzon (Sánchez-González et al. 2015). Three subspecies currently recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as common (del Hoyo et al. 2005). This species is considered to have a high dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 3.3% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). It is therefore tentatively suspected that this rate of cover loss may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame, with a best estimate of reduction being less than 5%.
