Taxonomic note
Previously listed as Hodgsonius phaenicuroides (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) but genetic analyses of Sangster et al. (2010) show both phaenicuroides and svecica in a monophyletic position with Luscinia luscinia and Luscinia megarhynchos. Two subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as widespread and fairly common in the Himalayas and rare to uncommon in Myanmar, northern Laos and northern Vietnam (del Hoyo et al. 2005), while the population in China has been estimated at < c.100,000 breeding pairs and < c.1,000 individuals on migration (Brazil 2009). The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats.
