Population justification: The global population is inferred to number 7.2 million mature individuals (Partners in Flight 2022).
Trend justification: The species has been undergoing a moderate decline at an average rate of 1.3% per year between 1970 and 2017 (Partners in Flight 2022). This equates to a decline of 12% over ten years. The population in North America has declined by 19% over the past ten years, though this value is non-significant (Pardieck et al. 2018). The population however fluctuates between years depending on insect availability (Webster 2020).
