Tickell's Leaf-warbler Phylloscopus affinis

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note
In past, often treated as conspecific with P. subaffinis, but differs in morphology, voice and habitat; molecular study (Johansson et al. 2007a) indicates not closely related. Recently described form occisinensis (Martens et al. 2008) was originally given species rank, but is virtually identical in song to nominate and morphologically undiagnosable. Zhang et al. (2019) have proposed that the cause of the apparent molecular difference in occisinensis is a rare instance of ‘deep mitochondrial divergence’ resulting from hybridisation of eastward-expanding affinis with a postulated extinct congener, which left a ‘ghost of introgression past’ in the genes of the colonising population. From this and evidence of its undiagnosability, it is concluded that occinsinensis is appropriately synonymised with the nominate. Two subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be locally common (Baker 1997). The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats.

Trend justification: The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats.
