Previously lumped with E. fulgens (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) but split based on differences in plumage (Renner and Schuchmann 2004), with stronger green back, slightly deeper green glittering throat and richer glittering purple crown, and in mitochondrial and nuclear DNA (Zamudio-Beltrán and Hernández-Baños 2015), as well as clear, although unpublished, differences in vocalizations. Monotypic.

Population justification: The population size has not been quantified.
Trend justification: The population trend has not been assessed. Tree cover loss within the range is negligible (<1% over ten years; Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein); therefore, in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats, the population is tentatively assessed as stable.
