Current view: Data table and detailed info
Taxonomic note
Previously placed in Trichastoma (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) but moved to this genus following Cai et al. (2019).
Geographical variation partly clinal; proposed subspecies connectens, from NC Sulawesi, and improbatum (of which sordidum is a synonym), from SE, considered to represent part of this cline, and therefore merged with rufofuscum. Subspecies finschi, however, distinctive: differs in its much more restricted white throat (2) and fulvous-buff vs greyish-white lower throat to vent, without contrasting darker flanks (3); study of voice, and what happens where this form and rufofuscum approach each other, therefore encouraged. Four subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as common and widespread (del Hoyo et al. 2007). This species is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 10.5% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is tentatively suspected that this loss of cover may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame.
