Taxonomic note
Otus magicus and O. tempestatis (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as O. magicus, and O. alfredi, O. siaoensis, O. enganensis, O. insularis and O. beccarii (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were split from O. magicus following Widodo et al. (1999), Lambert and Rasmussen (1998), Andrew (1992) and Holt et al. (1999). Prior to that all these taxa were lumped in O. magicus following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: Currie et al. (2004a) estimated 125-142 territories (i.e. possibly 250-284 mature individuals) in 2001/2002 based on modelling altitude and habitat suitability. G. Rocamora (in litt. 2021) reported that several territories have since disappeared at Fairview, La Misère and Souvenir, and above Port Glaud. The population size may therefore number 240-274 mature individuals, estimated to fall in the band of 200-280 mature individuals. 

Due to its small range on a single island, the species is assumed to function as one subpopulation.

Trend justification: The species is inferred to be declining due to it becoming increasingly difficult to find, and the reports that several territories have disappeared, likely due to habitat destruction (G. Rocamora in litt. 2021). The likely rate of this decline has not been quantified.
