Current view: Data table and detailed info
Taxonomic note
Ramphocelus passerinii was previously split as R. passerinii and R. costaricensis following AOU (1998), having earlier been assessed as a single species following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993). Divergence between them (1.8%) is lower than between most species of tanager (2.4–4.0%), visual differences are minimal (involving mainly females) and vocal differences minor. Playback experiments (Freeman and Montgomery 2017) show that the two forms respond readily to the songs of the other. Two subspecies recognised.

Population justification: The population is suspected to number 500,000-4,999,999 mature individuals (Partners in Flight 2022).
Trend justification: Due to its preference for open areas, the population is suspected to be increasing in response to forest loss and modification (Partners in Flight 2022).
