Justification of Red List category
This species is very poorly known and was described as new to science as recently as 2021. Despite its small range, it occurs in some of the most remote and difficult-to-visit forests on New Guinea. Consequently it is not thought to be at any risk. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.
Population justification
The population size has not been estimated. The species has a rather small range, but it is described as 'fairly common' (Diamond and Bishop 2015), while Milá et al. (2021) noted that they mist-netted four individuals in their 23 days of field work and described it as 'uncommon' at sites they visited.
Trend justification
There are no population trend data available for this species. Forest loss within its mapped range is minimal (<1% between 2011 and 2021; Global Forest Watch 2022, using data from Hansen et al. [2013] and methods disclosed therein) and there are no other known threats. Consequently while there remains uncertainty surrounding the threats of this species, there is no reason at present to believe the trend is anything but stable.
The species is currently known from only two montane isolates: the Kumawa Mts, on the Bomberai Peninsula, and the Fakfak Mts, on the Onin Peninsula, both in the Bird's Neck of western West Papua, Indonesia.
Milá et al. (2021) described the habitat in the Kumawa Mts as mid montane cloud forest with a canopy height of 10-30 m and an abundance of epiphytes.
Despite its limited range, forest loss is minimal (Global Forest Watch 2022) and there are no other identified threats. As a montane species, climate change may impact it in the future.
Conservation Actions Underway
None is known.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Confirm this species' distribution and identify whether it might occur in other mountain isolates in western West Papua. Calculate a robust population size for the species to help determine its extinction risk. Identify (and where appropriate/possible mitigate) threats to this species.
