LC
Sakhalin Grasshopper-warbler Helopsaltes amnicola

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note

As part of their overhaul of the Locustellidae (see below) Alström et al. (2018) introduced the generic name Helopsaltes to cover the monophyletic group of Locustella warbler species ochotensispleskei, certhiolapryeri, fasciolata and amnicola (del Hoyo and Collar 2016). They found no morphological diagnostic characters, but identified a clear difference in voice.

Before this genus change, Locustella fasciolata and L. amnicola (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously treated as a single species, L. fasciolata, following AERC TAC (2003), Cramp et al. (1977-1994) and Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993). Although described as a species, often treated as a subspecies of H. fasciolata, but genetic distinctiveness rather strong (Alström et al. 2011, Drovetski et al. 2004, Drovetski et al. 2015); and while it differs only subtly in morphology, with summer birds having browner, less olive-green upperparts (1), brown vs grey ear-coverts (ns1), reduced or no grey on dull olive-buff breast and flanks (1), warm fulvous-brown vs pale brown lower flanks to vent (1) and slightly shorter wing and tarsus (allow 1), vocally fairly distinctive, with slower (2), longer (2) song phrases (Boesman 2016). However, review of characters suggests distinctiveness of plumage characters not always consistent (Neufeldt & Netschajew 1977, Neufeldt & Netschajew 1978), and trend in H. fasciolata in NE China towards characters associated with present species (Kennerley & Pearson 2010) indicates more work is needed to confirm this split. Monotypic.
