Oenanthe bottae and O. frenata (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as O. bottae following Sibley & Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified. The species is described as uncommon in Eritrea and southern Ethiopia, and locally common to abundant in the west, central and south-east highlands of Ethiopia (del Hoyo et al. 2005). The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats.
