Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be locally common to not uncommon and irregular in occurrence (del Hoyo et al. 2002). This species is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 7.7% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). The species is adaptable to human-made habitats such as streets and gardens, and the population in South Africa has expanded where the introduction of alien trees to areas of former grassland has provided an increase in suitable habitat (del Hoyo et al. 2002). The population is therefore considered to be increasing.
